UPDATE: Police investigating fatal crash in Surrey

Victim was an occupant of the vehicle, not a pedestrian as first thought

After closing a section of road in Newton, following a fatal MVA early Friday (Dec. 15), Surrey RCMP have determined that the person killed in the crash was not a pedestrian, as they initially thought.

“Based on initial observations and the report received by police, the deceased person was believed to have been a pedestrian. Through further investigation it has been determined that the deceased person was actually passenger who was ejected from the vehicle,” police clarified in a release issued Friday afternoon.

According to a news release, the person was declared dead at the scene, “despite efforts of all involved.”

No details regarding the victim’s age or gender were shared.

A second person was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service and Surrey RCMP Criminal Collision Investigation Team are investigating.

A road closure remains in effect along 138 Street between 74 and 72A avenues for the investigation. The public is asked to avoid the area until further notice.

Investigators are collecting statements and canvassing for video. Anyone with information, including dash-cam footage in the area on 138 Street, is asked to contact the Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502 and quote file 2023-204342.
