The Langley Gymnastics Foundation was closed over the weekend of Feb. 22 and 23 after an outbreak of Norwalk-like virus hit staff and a handful of children.
Lisa Mcpherson, president of the Foundation’s board, said the entire center was cleaned and sanitized over the weekend to prevent any recurrence of the disease.
The outbreak of the disease, which is also known as Norovirus, hit about four staffers by Thursday evening, then Mcpherson herself got sick Thursday night.
By Friday, there were nine people who were known to be sick, she said.
The illness lasted about 24 to 48 hours, although Mcpherson doesn’t know if anyone was officially tested to confirm that it was the Norwalk virus.
One child of a staff member and another pre-school agd child got sick.
One young child was taken to the hospital because she had neck pain, on the fear that she might have meningitis. Mcpherson said the doctors confirmed the child did not have meningitis, and it’s unknown if the child had the same virus as the other cases.
Mcpherson was not aware of any hospitalizations due to the Norwalk outbreak.
Norwalk can cause nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, and usually lasts just 24 to 48 hours.
