Draft plans for the latest neighbourhood in Willoughby have been unveiled.

On Nov. 30, the Township hosted an open house at the Langley Events Centre to present the Smith Neighbourhood Plan, an area that consists of 192 acres loosely bounded by 210 Street on the east, 204 Street on the west, 72 Avenue on the south and 76 Avenue on the north.

According to the Smith Neighbourhood Plan Preferred Concept Report, which was submitted to the Township by Modus Planning, Design and Engagement in August, the Smith Neighbourhood will be “a complete, walkable and transit oriented neighbourhood with a range of housing options within convenient walking distance of local shops and services, neighbourhood schools, and transit services.”

Highlights include improvements to the Township’s future road network, particularly 208 Street, 72 Avenue and a new 212 Connector; an art park; a pedestrian-oriented retail street on 73A Avenue; the capacity to build a new elementary school and a new high school; and the construction of up to 2,600 housing units, with 90 per cent of those multi-family, in the form of townhouses and apartment buildings up to six storeys.

The plan also says there will be neighbourhood services located within “a five minute walk of residences,” with 100 per cent of residents and workers within 500 metres of “basic daily needs, a park or an access point to the open space and trails network” and 100 per cent of residences and commercial units within 500 metres of public transit.
