A young woman pulled into the parking lot of North Langley Church to use her phone Tuesday afternoon.

She would end up having to use it to call for help when a large tree crashed down onto the passenger and rear side of the small car.

Soon Langley Township firefighters were bucking the tree into smaller pieces to remove it from her vehicle in the parking lot strewn with leaves and branches.

Strong winds Tuesday cause problems for many around the Lower Mainland and the Central Interior and on Vancouver Island.

As of 7 p.m. Tuesday, there were 23,821 customers affected by 30 outages in the Lower Mainland and Sunshine Coast. Province-wide, the number was more than 48,000 customers without power.

The winds are forecast to ease overnight.
