It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Irmtraud Rathmann at the age of 79.
Irmtraud was born in the Silesian region of Germany (now part of present day Poland). As the war was ending, Irmtraud and her family, like thousands of other Germans, were forced to flee the region. They settled in the small farming town of Banslaben in what became West Germany. Irmtraud went on to apprentice as an architectural draftsperson. In 1965, Irmtraud, together with her husband, Kurt, and infant son, Stefan, immigrated to Canada and, in 1971, they settled in Langley. In 1973, Irmtraud and Kurt had their daughter, Julia. Irmtraud worked as a house designer for her entire career. In the early 90s, she started her own business "BC Drafting and Design Service" and continued to design hundreds of beautiful homes throughout the Fraser Valley and beyond until she retired at the age of 71.
Irmtraud was a strong, intelligent, hard working woman who loved her family tremendously. Her faith in God was unwavering and she was a very active member of her church. She loved to read and golf, and volunteered for many years with the Langley Hospice Society.
Irmtraud will be forever remembered by her children, Stefan (Kerry) and Julia (Cameron); her grandchildren, Cody (Miranda), Taylor (Ben), Makenna, Kyla and Gavin; great-grandchildren, Chandler and Parks; and her devoted friends.
A memorial service will be held at 11 am on Thursday, June 13 at Shepherd of the Valley Church: 20097 72 Ave, Langley.
