April 21, 1922 - May 26, 2020
Mary Bruhaug passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 26 at Langley Memorial Hospital, at the age of 98.
Mary was born on April 21, 1922 in New Castle, England, to Robert and Mary Patten, and was the eldest daughter of 13 children. The Patten family immigrated to Canada in 1927, settling in Sedgewick, Alberta. Mary met and married Jarl Bruhaug, and they had three children together; Terry, Janice and Ron.
In 1955, the Bruhaug family moved west to Surrey BC, before finally moving to the Langley area in 1972.
Mary was an active member of the Langley Legion for over 35 years, serving as the first female President for Branch 21, and never missed a poppy campaign. Mary was also a dotting grandmother to her 5 grandsons, attending countless baseball and hockey games. This also extended to her great-grandchildren, and Mary loved watching them play baseball, soccer, hockey and dance.
Preceded in death by her husband Jarl Bruhaug, and their son, Terry Bruhaug. Survived by her daughter, Janice (Mike) and son Ron (Sonya), 5 grandsons Barton (Julie), Brian (Jenn), Tyler (Leslie), Corey (Erika), and Chad (Carissa). She was also blessed with 8 great-grandchildren, Tanner, Taylor, Tarryn, Makayla, Layne, Tyson, Cole and Addison. Mary is also survived by siblings Joan Djos and Isabel Haider. Mary was blessed with a large, extended family and was never shy to tell everyone how proud she was of them all.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Langley Memorial, and Sunridge Gardens for their care of Mary during the last few weeks. A special thanks to Shannon Howard, who provided exceptional support during this extremely difficult time.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 256 at 26607 Fraser Hwy, Aldergrove, BC V4W 3L1.
