The article in question [“Building boom continues for Langley condos,” Jan. 4, Langley Advance] does not point out the lack of infrastructure in the Township. Willoughby is one of the fastest growing areas of Langley and yet lacks sidewalks on most of the major routes. The Township has made it clear the safety of people walking to and from Carvolth, for example, is not their concern.
There are few bike lanes in this area, and the Township seems to feel it is up to the developers to put in such items. Unfortunately this leads to inconsistencies. Try and bike down 208th Street these days and see how safe that is.
The area around schools and playgrounds sometimes are speed controlled, and sometimes not. Take a look at 82nd Avenue from 207A Street west which is now adjacent to a park, yet the speed is 50 km/h (and often more). When asked, the Township expresses no concern.
Roadways which brandish no stopping or no parking signs are ignored. Take a look at 207A at Yorkson Creek Middle School. People park here constantly and when the Township is called for enforcement, we are told the road is the responsibility of the adjacent strata. Yet when the strata tries to limit access they are told it is a public road. The Township supplies inadequate policing and is inconsistent in its policies.
We recognize that the Metro Vancouver population is moving east. But shouldn’t there be some mechanism to compel the Township to provide a safe environment for all the people from whom they expect to collect tax revenue?
