Dear Editor,

I was always under the impression that voting is important, and that the purpose of voting was to elect people who would make decisions in the best interest of the citizens they represent. With that in mind, as I was driving down 200th Street and noticed a development boasting of 2,000 new homes. I wondered how this mad rush to increase our population actually benefits those people who already live here.

This rapid increase in population means that out hospital is overcrowded, there aren’t enough schools to accommodate the children, our roads are clogged with increased traffic, the freeway is overcrowded with commuters, there aren’t enough parks/green spaces to accommodate everyone, and a host of other negative consequences.

I would like the mayor and council to outline to me the benefits of such a rapidly increasing population. We have lots of shopping, a casino, an events centre and numerous recreation centres. What is it we don’t have that a bigger population would give us? And it would be nice if our media would encourage them to do so.
