Dear Editor,
My claim to fame, besides being Santa for a couple of years at Seven Oaks Mall, is that I’m a storyteller. In fact, over 30 years ago I walked into my first senior home to do some storytelling.
Certainly, in most cases I’ve outlived my critics. And there’s been a few.
My storytelling is not for everyone; honestly, at times it’s not for me.
It’s not always easy to get my game face on. With seniors, I’m speaking to a lot of living, and at times to a life that may not feel fulfilled or valued. And when I show up speaking of kindness and forgiveness there may be no ears to hear.
Other times, it’s the warm reception that keeps me keeping on.
So 30 years later, I’d like to share a truth I’ve come to know: seniors are special.
What does it matter?
Day to day
Just slipping away…
What does it matter?
It matters because
You matter.
You are more than flesh and blood
You are more than personal history
You are a light upon this earth
That a higher power does see
And knows and shares
Your journey
Will welcome you home when you’re done
You are not just another…
You are a special someone.
