The Parade Ground Beneath Our Feet
They march no more
Their paces stilled by death
Where once they fought for might and right
They fought for liberty
They now are still – Our legacy
They march no more.
We meet to honour those who gave their lives so we could live
We who never shared the horrors that war will give
We who live free because they died
We dare not leave their deeds denied
To do so would desecrate their memory
And leave us with no history
To strive for peace and nevermore
To repeat the futile act of global war
As we see the crosses neatly in their rows
Let’s assemble once again to remember those
Who once had so much hope
No more to live and love, to sleep and eat
Their marching stilled as they lie
In the parade ground beneath our feet.
They march no more.
