A look back at some of the top sports stories in February

Moguls skier Eddie Hicks won top spot overall on the NorAm circuit in February.

• Courtney Shmyr in Italy as member of Canadian junior  short track speedskating team. At the Canada Winter Games, Shmyr wins gold, silver and bronze.

• Kathleen Auton wins silver in women’s air pistol target shooting at the Canada Winter Games.

• Kyle Burroughs, Shea Theodore and Brandon Potomak helped B.C. win gold in hockey at the Canada Winter Games.

• Lou Gibson won three silver medals in para-ski competitions at the Canada Winter Games.

• Nikolas Wamsteeker and Jessica Jiang teamed up to win gold in the figure skating pre-novice dance category at the Canada Winter Games.

• Woo Kim Tae Kwon Do won six gold, nine silver and three bronze medals at the taekwondo national championships. Jennifer Jasper won gold and bronze, while Charles Calogiros, Veronica Martinez, Eliana Calogiros, Sebastian Gomez and Keaghan Reed all won gold and silver in their categories. Zakary Kotzer and Tavia Jasper each won silver.

• Hawley Bennett-Awad helped the Canadian eventing team win silver at the World Eventing Games, the country’s first medal at a major world equestrian championship since 1978. It also qualified Canada for the 2012 Olympics in London.

• Fraser Valley Diving Club’s Joel Harrison, Kailee Lingham and Kim Lotnick qualified for the national championships.

• Westcoast Warriors squirt (12 and under) roller hockey team captured gold at the North American Roller Hockey championships.

• Langley FC partners with Abbotsford’s Magnusson Ford FC to land a team in the new EA Sports Premier Soccer League. The league replaces Metro as the highest level of youth soccer in B.C.

• NFL player Marcus Trufant of the Seattle Seahawks visited H.D. Stafford Middle School after Grade 7 student Kamren Loof-Cote won a national contest.
