Athelite and the Fraser Valley Cascades were the respective winners of the men’s and women’s divisions at the ninth annual Hoopfest basketball tournament.
The event, organized by Centrecourt, was held at the Langley Events Centre on Aug. 17 and 18.
In the men’s final, it was Athelite holding off the Trinity Western Spartans 91-80 to win the title. Athelite had come second at the 2012 event.
Athelite’s Andrew Sturgeon was named most valuable player while the Spartans’ Denny McDonald and Mark Perrin, as well as Colin Plumb (El Swampo) and Diego Kapelan (Runnin’ Rebels) earned all-star awards.
In the women’s final, the Cascades hammered the Douglas College Royals 79-31.
The Cascades’ Sarah Wierks earned MVP honours.
Her teammate Katie Brink, as well as the Royals’ Simran Bir and Kenny Whitney, earned all-star awards.
Denise Busayong (Falcons) and Jessica Jazzdarehee (2Legit2Quit) were also picked to the all-star team.
Altogether, nine men’s teams and four women’s teams took part in the event. This year’s event also marked a new initiative, as for every successful three-point shot, Centrecourt donated $1 to KidSport Langley. Altogether, 355 shots were made over the 30 games for a total of $355. And Basketball BC announced they would match the donation, bringing the total to $710.
