Beck named Cascades athlete of the week

Langley's Shelby Beck came off the bench to score four times in a pair of weekend victories for UFV women's soccer team

Langley's Shelby Beck was named the UFV Cascades player of the week after leading her soccer team to a pair of key Canada West conference victories on the road.

Beck scored a natural hat trick against the Winnipeg Wesmen in a 4-0 victory on Oct. 18 and then scored once and set up another goal by drawing a penalty kick in a 2-1 win over the Manitoba Bisons on Oct. 19.

"She was an attacking force off the bench in the second half and was able to make the game comfortable for us," said UFV coach Rob Giesbrecht.

And the victories were huge for the Cascades as it improved the team to 5-4-3 to wrap up the regular season and qualify for the Canada West quarter-finals.

UFV is on the road in Edmonton on Oct. 26 to play the second-place Alberta Pandas.

Beck, a second-year criminology student and a Walnut Grove graduate, led the Cascades in scoring with six goals despite starting just one of the 10 games.
