The last time Team B.C. won the gold medal at the Canada Winter Games in hockey, this year's current group of players wasn't even born yet.
And after a 1-2 record during pool play, it looked like the drought would continue.
But on Friday, in Halifax, site of the Winter Games, Team B.C. won when it mattered most, capturing the gold medal thanks to a 7-4 victory over Quebec.
The score was tied at four in the third period, before B.C. struck for three goals in the final 5:04.
"We said we weren't coming 6,000 kilometres for a silver medal," said B.C. head coach Russ Weber, a former assistant coach with the junior A Langley Hornets.
Team B.C. also had a trio of local players, with assistant captain Kyle Burroughs, from Langley, and Aldergrove's Shea Theodore and Brandon Potomack.
Burroughs, a defenceman, finished with a goal and seven assists.
During pool play, B.C. lost 5-4 in overtime to Quebec and 5-1 to Ontario. The team's lone win was 8-3 over Nova Scotia.
But the team found its game once elimination play began.
They doubled Manitoba 4-2 in the quarter-finals and then downed Ontario 5-2 in the semifinals.
