Langley-based Spartans look to defend league title

Last season’s BCIHL regular season champion, the TWU Spartans, will play the Langley Rivermen in pre-season action on Sept. 3.

The Trinity Western University Spartans men’s hockey team will begin its quest for its first ever B.C. Intercollegiate Hockey League championship with a tough test.

The Spartans will open their 2015/16 BCIHL regular season schedule with a two-game series on the road against three-time defending league champion Selkirk Oct. 2-3.

Following their opening weekend, TWU will return to the Langley Events Centre for its home opener against Simon Fraser on Oct. 10.

All of the Spartans’ home games will be played at the LEC.

This year’s 24-game regular season slate will see all five BCIHL teams play a balanced schedule in which they will see each team three times at home and three times on the road.

The Spartans’ schedule has them playing six home games and four road games prior to the Christmas break before playing six home games and eight road games over the second half of the season.

As part of the BCIHL’s 10th anniversary celebrations, the league will host its first-ever regular season showcase from Jan. 15 to 17 at the Bill Copeland Sports Centre in Burnaby.

The weekend will include a total of six games that will all contribute to the league standings. Over the course of the weekend, the Spartans will play Selkirk on Jan. 15 and Eastern Washington on Jan. 17.

The 2015-16 BCIHL regular season will conclude on March 5, with the first round of playoffs being contested from March 11 to 13.

The 2016 BCIHL Championships will take place from March 18 to 20.

The Spartans’ final regular season home game will be March 4 against Victoria.

TWU’s 2015/16 calendar will also feature a trio of pre-season games – one against the BCHL’s Langley Rivermen on Sept. 3 and two against SFU on Sept. 11 and Sept. 18 – and two mid-season exhibition games against top flight NCAA Division I opponents Wisconsin, on Jan. 1, and Nebraska-Omaha, on Jan. 2.

Last year, the Spartans finished atop the BCIHL’s regular season standings with a program best record of 17-5-0-2 before bowing out of the playoffs in the first round after losing their best-of-three series to SFU.
