Each week, the North Langley Football league offers a summary of play, compiled by Jennifer Schroeder.
Here’s a look back at week three of play for the young football players.
Flag:
The Bears split the days games 2-2 in Mission.
Quarterback Jonathan Cherry (#20)tosses a screen pass to receiver Cooper Corbett (#16) for the first down.
Atom:
After a close game the North Langley Atom Bears defeated the Mission Niners 20-19.
The Bears offence was able to hold off the Niners defence, creating holes for Sam Sieben (#25) to have two touchdown scoring runs.
The Niners lost possession of the ball when Kache Potozny (#31) made a fumble recovery and with a big block by Jayden Bernemann (#89), allowed Sieben to score the final touchdown for the Bears.
Scott Kortus (#5) and the rest of the defensive line were hard at work trying to stop the Niners offensive line throughout the entire game.
The Bears look forward to their next game in Chilliwack.
Peewee:
The North Langley Peewee Bear’s defence allowed no points for the second straight game, in their 32-0 win over the Mission Niners on the road on Saturday.
Once again, the defensive line was on fire, led by Lucca Patterson (#67) who had two sacks, a fumble recovery, and several tackles for losses.
Reece Fennell (#33) added to the turnovers with an interception and Ryan Heutink (#54) also had a fumble recovery.
The offence was solid again.
Rylan Middleton (#12) scored two majors on the day, with two touchdowns added by Damon Bernemann (#9) and another by Rowen Engele (#36).
Aiden McMurtry (#44), Evan Hoy (#82), Owyn Caster (#8), Lachlan MacInnes (#81) and quarterback Ben Evans (#11) added to the Bears offensive attack.
The Bears look to extend their shutout streak next weekend when they visit the Chilliwack Red Giants.
Junior Bantam: had a bye this week
Bantam:
The bantam North Langley Bears were under the Friday night lights in Chilliwack this week.
The game began with Zack Siegemund making an incredible pick six, which unfortunately was the Bears only points scored for the evening.
Ciaran Davies had an interception and a 20-yard run.
Bears’ offence experimented with a shotgun formation.
Callum Middleton and Mitchell Gibbs both received the ball with a few yards gained, but just wasn’t enough.
Chris Morrison fought hard laying out both Chilli’s offensive and defensive players.
Luke Sommerville managed to stop the Giants just short of the end zone and Bears quarterback Jesse Nielsen showed his stamina by running with the ball and refused to go down even after numerous sacs from the Giants.
In the end the Bears suffered a 35-6 loss.
Midget:
North Langley Kodiaks hosted Westside Warriors at their home field at McLeod Athletic Park this past Saturday.
The Kodiaks warmed up the score board for an early 3-0 lead as (#21) Charlie May kicked a beautiful 35-yard field goal after a strong march towards the end zone by the offence.
Starting off the second quarter, Kodiaks quarterback Isaiah Key (#2) passed a stunning 40-yard spiral into the capable hands of receiver Luke Chalk (#81) despite defensive coverage. Charlie “Super-Boot” May (#21) effortlessly completed the convert bringing the score to 10-0 for Kodiaks.
As the Warriors attempted to coordinate their offensive battle, Kodiaks’ defence sacked the Warrior’s quarterback causing a fumble recovered by Kodiak’s own defensive lineman Daniel Evanow (#85).
As half time approached, the Warriors managed to kick a field goal bringing the score to 10-3.
Throughout the third quarter, Kodiak’s running backs Caleb Nielson (#25) and (#31) Ethan Bernardin (#31) hammered the ball through the Warriors defence play after play.
As the Warriors were contained at their own three yard line, they punted downfield, which was returned by Ryan Barthelson (#23), who dodged his way down the sideline for another Kodiak’s touchdown.
May completed the convert once again bringing the third quarter score to 18-3.
Following the 4th quarter kickoff, Kodiak’s Mason “Chopping” Block (#44) made a huge tackle at the Warrior’s 20-yard line. May then tackled the Warrior’s ball carrier in the back field for a loss of eight yards on the very next play.
As the Warriors battled back with a punt to recover lost ground, Kodiak’s Barthelson returned the ball for a huge 65-yard run as he weaved back and forth catching the defence on their heels.
After Kodiak’s loss yards for a penalty, quarterback Austin Balzer (#6) threw an excellent 25-yard pass into the waiting arms of receiver Adam Brass (#14) bringing the score to 24-3.
Dependable May then added the kick for the conversion for the extra point.
The Warriors had difficulty completing passes against the Kodiaks amazing defensive coverage. As one such pass was thrown, Barthelson found the interception and ran the ball in for another stupendous defensive touchdown.
Without fail, May answered with a point on conversion rounding out the Kodiak’s score to 32-3.
As the Warriors offence attempted to increase their position, defensive lineman Ethan Croome (#59) and Eric Bouma (#69) led in a huge tackle to ensure no yards gained.
This win brought a roaring start to the Kodiak’s season with a 3-0 record.
