Once again, Walnut Grove’s Shawn and Paula Murphy were the fastest with a six-gun, returning from the World Fast Draw Association’s (WFDA) wax bullet elimination championships in Sturgis, South Dakota, at the end of May with the men’s and women’s titles.
It was a good start to the season by the pair, who are members of the Langley-based Thunderbird Fast Draw Club and what Den Robinson, fast draw director with the Langley Rod and Gun Club (home of the Thunderbird club) , described as a “good head start on the WFDA’s all-around top gun titles for this year’s run.”
Shawn is the defending world fast draw title holder of last year’s all-around top gun standings, while Paula is a top-ranked female competitor, who finished fourth overall in the ladies’ division.
Both were presented with the buckle awards from last year at the Sturgis event. Robinson was also awarded a buckle award for being 15th overall in the rankings.
Robinson announced the Thunderbird club will host another WFDA Sanctioned Blank Index Fast Draw Championships at the Aldergrove Fair on July 15 and 16 of this year, making it the 13th association-sanctioned contest for the Fair.
“We will also repeat with another ‘Celebrity Shootout’ at the fair at ‘High Noon’ on the 15th,” Robinson said.
“We use only blank ammunition, and yes, there will be earplugs.”

Over the years, the club has produced three world fast draw champions and many of the club’s members hold world speed records in the sport.
