After a 2-2 tie during round robin play, the Langley Eagles got another crack at the North Shore Winter Club. And the second time around was no contest as the Eagles hammered their foes 10-0 to win the tier 4 final four championship.
The victory advances the peewee A4 hockey team to Fort Nelson where they will compete at the provincial championships. The tournament begins on Sunday (March 18).
The Eagles went 3-0-1 at the final four tournament, outscoring the competition 21-4in the process.
“Great goaltending, and commitment to team defence coupled with a very aggressive forecheck was the difference,” said coach Kevin Qualtrough.
The coach has been impressed by his team’s work ethic.
“The kids have played their hearts out,” he said.
“A lot of teams we play comment on how hard these kids work on the ice, how relentless they forecheck at every opportunity.”
The Eagles have amassed a 52-18-9 record on the season, which includes a tournament victory last month in Phoenix. In the championship final, Langley overcame a 3-0 deficit to take the title 6-4.
The Eagles are a balanced bunch — in Phoenix, they boasted all three top scorers.
“The best part is that it is never just one kid or one line,” Qualtrough said.
“Every game, a different person or group of people step up and manage to help the team succeed, whether it’s a timely save, a great defensive play or a much needed goal.”
