Langley Olympians invite swim teams to compete

Langley’s swim club members competed two weekends in a row.

The Langley Olympians Swim Club competed at the 20th annual VPSC Invitational on Oct. 29 and 30.

The Langley Olympians Swim Club competed at the 20th annual VPSC Invitational on Oct. 29 and 30 when several achieved club records and more.

They also hosted the 10th annual LOSC Invitational Nov. 5 and 6.

The meet was attended by 14 clubs coming from across the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island brining in 300 swimmers to compete.

Many of the local swimmers achieved best times, new provincial time standards, club records and top placings in their respective events.

Luke Stewart-Beinder (11) put his best foot forward by winning seven out of eight of his events in boys 11andU category. LOSC had two swimmers achieve new time standards. Isobel McNeill (10) qualified for the BC AAA Championships by achieving three new AAA time standards and Alicia Schmelcher (10) qualified for the BC AA Championships by achieving five new AA time standards. Bailey Herbert (14) broke the girls 13- and 14-year old club record for the 400 metre freestyle with a time of 4:27.72.

Many of the LOSC swimmers consistently made finals and achieved personal best times.

First place finishes:

Luke Stewart-Beinder – boys 11&U: 400 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 100 butterfly, 200 individual medley, 400 individual medley, 200 freestyle and 200 butterfly.

Bailey Herbert – girls 14&O: 400 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 individual medley, 100 freestyle, and 400 individual medley.

Joshua Kim – boys 14&O: 200 breaststroke, 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke.

Hugh McNeill – boys 12-13: 100 backstroke, 200 individual medley and 200 backstroke.

Isobel McNeill – girls 11&U: 200 individual medley, 400 individual medley and 200 backstroke.

Piyush Kaul – Boys 11&U: 100 backstroke and 200 backstroke.

Josie Field – girls 14&O: 200 butterfly.

VPSC Invitational

The local swimmers were from the top four groups: national group, provincial group, age group performance and regional group. The VPSC meet consisted of sprint events (50 and 100 metres). LOSC swimmers achieved new club records, new provincial qualifying times and overall top five aggregate point winners.

Bailey Herbert, 13, broke three club records in the girls 13 and 14 category for her 100 m freestyle (58.34), 50 m butterfly (30.01) and 100 m individual medley (1:05.57).

Fourteen-year-old Joshua Kim broke the boys 13- to 14-year-old 100 m individual medley record with a time of 1:02.89.

LOSC swimmers Ella Belgica and Gracie Maryschak qualified for the BC AA Championships. The Langley Olympians had 10 swimmers place in the top five for aggregate points earned in their age categories.

• 12-year-old girls: Selina Schmelcher, 3rd; Danika Bedard, 5th

• 13-year-old girls: Bailey Herbert, 1st

• 14-year-old boys: Joshua Kim, 1st; Ayush Kau, 4th

• 14-year-old girls: Josie Field, 2nd

• 15 & over boys: Reigns Wang, 4th

• 15 & over girls: Demetra Sicoli, 4th
