Mustangs lead Langley medal charge at Nanaimo meet

Langley athletes had a strong showing over the weekend at the BC Athletics championships jamboree held at the Rotary Bowl in Nanaimo.

The three-day competition featured track and field athletes competing in the midget, youth, junior and senior divisions.

The Langley athletes combined to win 18 gold, 13 silver and 14 bronze medals.

The majority of the athletes who medalled were at the meet representing the Langley Mustangs Track and Field Club while three represented the BC Flyers, two competed as unattached athletes and one medalled for the Valley Royals.

Natalia Monro led the way for the Mustangs, winning four silver medals (100m, 80m hurdles, 200m hurdles and long jump in the midget (ages 14/15 division).

Other Mustangs medallists were:

Midget — Eniko Sara (gold high jump, gold javelin); Ian Vandergugten (gold 100m, gold 100m hurdles); Brooke Mussche (gold 800m); Jessie Markin (silver 200m, bronze 100m); Rori Denness (silver javelin); Jordan Jacobs (bronze 100m, bronze 200m); Holly Harrison (bronze high jump); Prabhasha Wickramaarachchi (bronze long jump); Cameron Calbick (bronze 200m hurdles); and Jake Schmidt was second in the high jump as part of the pentathlon.

Youth — Kayla Weltzin (silver 800m); Megan Champoux (silver 100m hurdles);

Junior — Joanna Williams (gold 3000m steeplechase); Dean Ellenwood (gold 800m); Alex Savage (gold long jump); Adrianna Klassen (bronze 800m); Autumn Wyatt (bronze 3000m steeplechase); Sophie Pauls (bronze shot put); and Nathan King was first in the 100m and shot put, second in the 400m and third in the 110m hurdles in the decathlon.

Senior — Katerina Maryschuk (gold high jump, gold shot put); Altn Bekirova (gold 100m hurdles, silver high jump); Melissa Fraser (gold javelin); James Lam (gold 1500m); Justin Massar (gold 110m hurdles, silver long jump, bronze high jump).

Three teams of Mustangs relay runners also found the podium.

In the male 14+ category, the team of Adam Marshall, Zachary Matyas, James Lam and Tyler De Jong won gold in the 4x400 while Dean Ellenwood, Tate Wyatt, Zach Wyatt and Jake Schmidt won bronze in the same event.

And Adrianna Klassen, Emma Dearden, Kayla Weltzin and Brooke Mussche won silver in the female 14+ 4x400 event.

BC Flyers

Kiana Bekar won gold in the junior triple jump while Mira Foster was third in the event. And Ethan Foster won bronze in the youth decathlon. He was first in the 400m and long jump, second in the high jump and pole vault and third in the shot put, discus and javelin.

Valley Royals

Shaunika Suriya won gold in the midget high jump, silver in the shot put and bronze in the long jump.

Unattached

Cassidy Cardle won gold in the midget 1500m race walk while Will Riley was second in the youth 800m.
