Langley-based ball hockey team reigns at elite tournament

The Valley Passion won the Western Challenge Cup ball hockey tournament.

The team was competing at the Western Challenge Cup ball hockey tournament from July 12 to 15 in Burnaby and Vancouver.

And the rep squad, made up of the top players from the Valley Ball Hockey Association and containing a large contingent of Langley players, scored twice to erase a 3-2 deficit to edge the Delta Giants 4-3 in the championship final.

The win wrapped up a perfect tournament for the Passion, who won their pool with a 3-0-1 record.

They also beat the Ridge Meadows Renegades 3-1 in the semifinals.

Round robin scores included a 3-1 win over Metro, 4-1 over Ridge Meadows and 7-2 versus the Surrey Scorpions. They also tied their first game of the tournament, 3-3 against the Giants.

Mitch Van Geel led the Passion in scoring with five goals and one assist during the round robin and then another three helpers in the playoffs.

Shane Carey had six assists through the round robin while Neil Osborne finshed with four goals in the first four games and then added three assists in the playoff round.

Also coming up big during the playoff round were Brett Abercrombie with a pair of goals and Jas Kahlon (two goals, one assist) and Cameron McDonald (one goal, two assists) who both had three points in the final two games.

Carter Dyck and Trevor Pullen split goaltending duties.

The team is made up of Carter Dyck, Braeden Williams, Dylan Churchwell, Matt Rook, Jas Kahlon, Cameron McDonald, Kevan Broekhuysen, Ben Vandergoes, Mitch Van Geel, Neil Osborne, Travis Fortune, Brad Sinclair, Shane Carey, Brett Abercrombie, Cameron Johnson, Dustin Pruss, James Broekhuysen, Brett Coats-Weidemann, Trevor Pullen. Coaches are  Al Abercrombie, Wayne Van Geel and Jesse Churchwell and team manager is Cindy Van Geel.
