It was jubilation one game but heartbreak the next for a team of peewee ball hockey players.
The PW6 Lightning, who had won the right to represent the Fraser Valley at the provincial championships after winning the Valley Ball Hockey Association title, were competing at North Delta’s Sungod Arena over the Canada Day long weekend.
They captured the silver medal after losing 3-2 in overtime to Tri-City. In that game, the Lightning surrendered a 2-0 advantage.
It was a 180 degree turn from the previous game where the Lightning were the team erasing a 2-0 deficit to Delta, scoring the tying goal with 5.8 seconds to play and then winning it in double overtime.
“We were ecstatic just to get as far as we did,” said coach Darryl Power.
“There were some teary eyes on the floor when the other team scored, but all in all, it was a pretty good run.”
“Start of the year, the goal was to have fun through the season — the usual goal — try to win a few games and see what happens from there,” Power said.
But fairly early on, it was obvious the team had talent, and most importantly, depth, for the grind of the season.
The Lightning were 12-2-2 during the regular season before catching fire in the playoffs, outscoring the opposition 23-6.
They earned the team the right to advance to provincials where they placed second in the pool with a 2-1 record. The lone loss came at the hands of Tri-City.
They then upset Delta in the semifinals to get another crack at Tri-City.
The team is made up of Ayden Power (captain), Keith Haidish (assistant captain), Carson Preston (assistant captain), Adan Finch, Bassanio Tsang, Dylan Bradford, Garrett Boehm, Jacob Peters, Joe McDougall, Joel Ward, Logan Pender, Lucas Mills, Mattias Kessler, Nathean Moore, Rickey Muralt, Riley Geiger, Ryan Neurauter and Kevin Craig.
The coaching staff is Darryl Power, Rod Haidish and John Kessler.
