Spartans blanked by Clan

Trinity Western hockey team loses back-to-back games for first time this season

For the first time this season, the Trinity Western Spartans hockey team has lost back-to-back games.

The Spartans lost 3-0 to the SFU Clan on Friday in B.C. Intercollegiate Hockey League action.

The game was played at Burnaby's Bill Copeland Arena.

The loss dropped the Spartans to 16-4-0-2. TWU has already secured top spot for next month’s playoffs.

SFU improved to 11-11-0-0 on the season.

"We had our chances in the second half of the game but we were not able to capitalize on some of those opportunities," commented TWU head coach Barret Kropf.

"Silas (Matthys) played well enough to give us a chance to win, but at the end of the day Simon Fraser has a great team. They have paced themselves and have set themselves up well for the play-offs run.

"The have the pedigree and now that they are starting to put it together they are going to be a dangerous team down the stretch."

The Clan out-shot the Spartans 40-24 with Matthys making 37 saves in the loss. SFU's Andrew Parent made 24 saves for the shutout.

SFU got goals from Josh McKissock and Jono Ceci in the first period while Tyler Basham added one in the third.

The two teams meet again on Feb. 21 in Burnaby once again.
