The Trinity Western University Spartans women’s volleyball team downed the Alberta Pandas 3-1 Sunday afternoon to claim the top spot in the annual West Coast Classic tournament at UBC.

Scores were 25-18, 25-16, 19-25, and 25-21.

The victory improves the Spartans’ record to 9-1 in pre-season play, and reverses an earlier defeat in the tournament to the Pandas on Friday

Fifth year outside Elly Wendel with 18 kills and fourth year outside Sophie Carpentier with 14 kills led the Spartan attack.

“I’m very pleased with how we played in the first and second sets. I thought we had a little bit of a lull in the third and part way through the fourth set. But very pleased that the girls started to rally. They rallied back in the fourth set and pushed hard,” said TWU head coach Ryan Hofer. “I appreciate all the work that they have put in this was a tough weekend. Five games in four days was a grind. They have earned a bit of a break.”

“I think this team is just coming together and they have some good things instore for them.”

Next up for the Spartans is Canada West Conference play.

TWU will open league play in Regina against the Regina Cougars on Friday, Oct. 28 and Saturday, Oct. 29.
