Opposing teams’ nets continue to get a thrashing as the Trinity Western Spartans are showing no signs of slowing down from their early season scoring pace.
The Spartans women’s soccer team pumped in another 10 goals in a pair of victories which improved the country’s third-ranked team to 5-0-0. They have scored 25 goals in that span.
The most recent victories were 4-0 on Saturday against the Manitoba Bisons and 6-0 on Sunday versus the Winnipeg Wesmen. Both games were in Winnipeg.
In the first game, Krista Gommeringer and Alicia Tesan put the Spartans ahead 2-0 15 minutes in, with the second goal really opening things up.
Jennifer Castillo and Vanessa Kovacs then added another pair before the half.
Kristen Funk stopped five shots for the shutout and then made another three saves on Sunday for yet another clean sheet. Funk has been beaten just once in five games.
Jessica King opened the scoring in the 33rd minute and Tessa Meyer broke open the game with goals two minutes apart.
The second half was much of the same.
Gommeringer continued her impressive rookie season, scoring for the fifth straight game. She tallied twice and set up three others in the two games and leads the conference in both goals (seven) and assists (six).
Three minutes later, Stephanie Chin made it 5-0 and Tesan rounded things out with a goal in the 88th minute.
The Spartans return home this weekend for a pair of games at Rogers Field with the eighth-ranked Regina Cougars playing on Friday and the Saskatchewan Huskies on Saturday. Both games begin at 5 p.m.
