Buoyed by one of their most complete efforts of the season, the Trinity Western Spartans returned to the win column.
The Spartans women's soccer team scored four times — twice in each half — as they routed the host Northern British Columbia (UNBC) Timberwolves 4-0 in Prince George.
"We came out with lots of energy and had chance after chance in the first half," said coach Graham Roxburgh.
"It was a good overall performance and was really pleased with our start. We had energy and passed the ball well."
Natalie Boyd opened the scoring in the fifth minute and Jennifer Castillo doubled the lead in first-half stoppage time.
Krista Gommeringer blew the game open with goals five minutes apart in the 83rd and 88th minutes, respectively.
Trinity Western outshot UNBC 29-5, including 16-2 for shots on target.
Rachel Bedek stopped both shots for the shutout.
"UNBC continues to get better and made it difficult for us but we were able to break them down," Roxburgh said. "We had great performances from Natalie Boyd and our back four played extremely well.
"Stephanie Chin had a really good game tonight as she dealt with their most threatening forward.
"We had a lot of good performances."
The win improved the Spartans to 2-1-3 and they sit in eighth place in the Canada West standings with nine points. They are three points out of fourth place.
The team also fell two spots in the most recent CIS rankings, as they dropped from seventh to ninth spot.
The team faces a pair of home matches this weekend at Rogers Field Oct. 4 versus Winnipeg and Oct. 5 versus Manitoba. Both games are at 5 p.m.
