The UBC Thunderbirds are all that stand in the way of the Trinity Western Spartans hosting the Canada West final four women’s soccer championships.
The two-long time rivals will play on Friday night at TWU’s Rogers Field in the conference quarter-finals.
The Spartans are the top seed after a regular season which saw them go 10-1-1. UBC was fourth in the division at 6-4-2, which includes a 1-0 win over Trinity Western on Sunday afternoon in Vancouver.
The Spartans, who had already clinched top spot after a 4-2 home win on Friday night over the Fraser Valley (UFV) Cascades, rested several starters against UBC.
Against UFV, Jessica King scored twice while Seina Kashima and Krista Gommeringer had the other. For the Cascades, former Walnut Grove standout Shelby Beck had both goals.
“I’m a bit relieved because it got a little tricky in the second half when we gave away a sloppy goal, but give full credit to our goals,” said Trinity Western coach Graham Roxburgh following the division-clinching game.
“I’m really pleased; we did what we set out to do tonight and that was win the division.”
King was second in Canada West goal scoring with a dozen goals in 11 games. She also tallied the winner seven times out of the 10 Spartan victories.
“I thought Jess King was at a different level, her goals were special,” Roxburgh said.
The Spartans are ranked second in the country heading into the post-season and they will put their 6-0-0 home mark on the line against UBC. Game time is 6 p.m.
