Stealth add eight at NLL draft

Vancouver pro lacrosse team adds depth, quality, says GM

After wheeling and dealing at last year's draft, the Vancouver Stealth stayed with their selections for the 2015 National Lacrosse League entry draft.

The Stealth selected eight new bodies at Monday's draft, which was held at the Toronto Rock Athletic Centre.

"We're really happy with tonight's draft in terms of the depth and quality of the players who we drafted," said Stealth president and general manager Doug Locker.

Without their first or second round picks after a a few moves last year, the Stealth did not pick until late in the second round as they had a pair of compensatory picks at 19th and 21st overall.

The team used those to selected a pair of left-handed forwards: Jordan Durston and Shayne Adams.

Durston recorded 64 points (24 goals, 40 assists) in 19 games this past season as he helped the Six Nations Arrows captured the Minto Cup.

"It's amazing to be part of the Stealth organization," he said.

"It is just a crazy feeling right now. I am really excited to be picked by Vancouver and I hope to step into the line-up and make an impact."

Head coach Dan Perreault said the Stealth had been keeping a close eye on Durston all season.

"We like guys that know how to win and Jordan is just coming off another Minto Cup victory with Six Nations," Perreault said.

Adams played senior B last year with the St. Catharines Saints and is a recent product of the University of Detroit Mercy.

At the junior A level, Adams was a prolific scorer who racked up 263 points in 84 career games split between St. Catharines and Six Nations.

The Stealth's third round pick was another lefty forward, Connor Brown, who finished second in the Ontario Lacrosse Association Junior B League last year with 51 goals and 115 points.

Vancouver had a pair of picks in the fourth round, taking defenceman Riley Campbell (Peterborough Lakers) and local product Evan Messenger, of the Delta Islanders.

In 56 career junior A games, Messenger had 87 goals and 195 points.

“Evan is a very good athlete and being from the West, I had a chance to see him play a lot. He is a lefty with a very good skill set and is a young guy with a very bright future,” Perreault said.

With a pair of picks in the fifth round, the team selected Ryan Wagner (Niagara) and Keegan Letourneau (Six Nations) and then Blake Curry (Seneca) with their final pick in the sixth round.

The senior A Langley Thunder of the Western Lacrosse Association saw two of their players selected in Monday's NLL draft.

Anthony Malcom — the league's rookie of the year this past summer — went in the second round to the Buffalo Bandits.

And in the fourth round, Jacob Ruest was selected by the Calgary Roughnecks.

Malcom was tied for second on Langley with 26 goals and was fourth in points with 49 while Ruest had eight goals and 32 points.
