Two more victories for the Trinity Western Spartans have pushed them to atop the Canada West standings.
The women's soccer team, ranked fifth in the country, scored four goals apiece in both matches, a 4-1 victory over the Regina Cougars on Saturday and 4-0 over the Manitoba Bisons on Sunday. Both victories came on the road as the Spartans improved to 6-1-0.
Against the Bisons, Melissa Mobilio scored twice in the first half while Jennifer Castillo and Daniela Gerig had one goal apiece.
"Melissa was fantastic today and showed why she is one of the premier players in Canada," said Spartans coach Graham Roxburgh.
"Her movement, her ability to run at people and her decision making was excellent."
The only blemish on the team's performance was conceding a goal, which ended goalkeeper Kristen Funk's — and the team's — shutout streak at 422 minutes.
"We had lots of good performances all around, Natalie Boyd played extremely well all weekend and Jenna Di Nunzio did tremendously well and was unfortunate not to be rewarded with a goal.
"I'm disappointed we couldn't get Funk the shutout, but in the end, it was a good win."
Leading 2-1 at the half, Castillo got the Spartans some insurance in the 71st minute when she headed home a corner kick.
Gerig completed the scoring in extra time, taking a pretty feed from Nikki Wright and placing it neatly in the back of the net.
Against the Cougars, Boyd had a goal and two assists.
Trinity Western broke open the game with goals three minutes apart from Meyer and Wright early in the second half.
Gerig added another goal in the 81st minute.
The Spartans play a pair of home games this weekend, Friday against the Victoria Vikes (4-2-2) and Saturday against the Fraser Valley Cascades (3-3-2).
Both games begin at 5 p.m. at Rogers Park on the TWU campus.
