Updated: Langley's Ellenwood, Rolfe, Savage lead the way at Legions for local athletes

Langley's Hannah Rolfe (centre) won the gold medal in the high jump in the midget girls division at the Royal Canadian Legion track and field championships over the weekend. It was one of nine medals won by Langley athletes.

Nine Langley athletes found the podium over the weekend at the 2013 Royal Canadian Legion track and field championships at McLeod Park.

Four of the athletes were representing Team B.C./Yukon while the other four were representing the Langley  Mustangs Track and Field Club. The ninth was competing as an unattached athlete.

Leading the way for the B.C./Yukon squad was Dean Ellenwood, who captured gold in the midget boys 800m race —  with a time of 1:56.12 — and narrowly missed another gold, taking silver in the 300m race. Ellenwood crossed the finish line in 36.67, just 0.03 behind the gold-medal winner.

In the youth girls javelin, Brittni Wolczyk won gold with a throw of 48.71m.

Robyn Buckingham won silver in the youth girls heptathlon, accumulating 4,722 points over the six events. She was just 64 points behind the gold medal winner.

And Nick Colyn took bronze in the youth boys 2000m steeplechase event with a time of 6:00.47.

All four athletes also complete for the Mustangs.

Representing the Mustangs at the Legion championships, four other athletes finished on the podium in their respective events.

Hannah Rolfe won gold in the midget girls high jump, clearing 1.67m.

Fernando Martinez and Joel Harrison both won silver in their respective events.

Martinez cleared 4.1m in the youth boys pole vault while Harrison scored 3,002 points in the pentathlon.

And Lauryn Cheung took bronze in the midget girls pole vault after clearing 2.7m.

And Alexander Savage won the midget long jump title, leaping 6.66m.

Savage usually trains with the South Fraser Track and Field Club, was at the Legion as an unattached athlete.
