Whitehead races to gold medal

Trinity Western Spartans sprinter first across the finish line at Coquitlam meet

Trinity Western Spartans' sprinter Liza Whitehead posted a season's best time en route to winning gold in the 100m.

Whitehead finished in a time of 12.01 to take the gold on June 4 at the All-Comers Meet, which was held at Coquitlam's Percy Perry Stadium.

The meet featured athletes from TWU, the University of Alberta and the University of Victoria. Athletes unaffiliated with the schools also competed.

Taking bronze in the 100m was another Spartans sprinter, Hazel Ross, who crossed the finish line in 12.77.

That was one of two medals won by Ross, who took the silver in the 100m hurdles with a time of 14.65 while her teammate, Anastasia Pearse won bronze in 14.69.

Pearse was also fourth in the 400m hurdles.

And Ayla Akehurst won silver in the triple jump with a leap of 11.05m.

On the men's side, Calum Innes won a pair of bronze medals in the 100m and 400m events. He crossed the finish line in 11.07 and 50.57, respectively.

Meg Harradine posted a personal best in the 800m in a time of 2:17.04.

Harradine, a Walnut Grove alum, finished sixth in the event.

Other top 10 finishes for TWU athletes included:

Fiona Benson (fourth in the 1500m), Leah Robinson (fifth in the 800m), Nick Ayin (fifth in the 100m), Tunji Taylor-Lewis (sixth in the 100m), Stephen Humphrey (ninth in the 100m), Chris Voth (sixth in the 1500m) and Ross Brown (12th in the 800m).
