It was a great weekend, all-around, for North Langley Football Association teams.
The Bears’ atom team fell to a powerful Abbotsford squad, but on the flip side, North Langley’s peewee, junior bantam, and midget squads rolled to impressive victories.
Atom
The Bears showed a lot of heart despite falling to last season’s atom division champion, Abbotsford Falcons by a 38-12 score at McLeod Athletic Park (MAP).
In a losing cause, the Bears’ offence was led by Jackson Brhelle and Colten Lifton, who scored the home team’s two touchdowns.
Dain Onyanabo had a strong game on defence, causing disruptions all game and Noah Hollingsworth made a goal-stopping tackle.
Peewee
The Bears bounced back from a tough loss in week one to shut out the Abbotsford Black Falcons 37-0 on a wet MAP field Saturday.
North Langley’s defence was outstanding, with Brody Hunter, Jesse Davison, Lucca Patterson, and Talon Schroeder leading the way. Rowen Engele, Aiden McMurtry, and Patterson all had quarterback sacks.
The Bears offence was on fire. Ben Evans set the pace with a game-opening, 65-yard kick return touchdown and the Bears didn’t look back.
Evans added another running touchdown in the game. The Bears finished with six touchdowns on the day , including two from Damon Bernemann and one each from Lachlan MacInnes and Lucas Kinch.
Junior bantam
The Bears battled to a 22-14 win over the host Meadow Ridge Knights on Saturday.
From the starting kick off it was obvious both teams showed up to win as the play was filled with hard hits and strong drives.
Mathieu Gale led the way right out of the gate, with a strong drive down the left side of the field that put the Bears in a great position.
Within a few downs, Gale put the Bears on the scoreboard, giving them the lead and ensuring the Knights would have to respond. Despite the Knights’ determination and multiple advances for the next two quarters, the Bears consistently stopped them in their tracks with some key tackles.
This tight game became incredibly intense as the Meadow Ridge boys saw their first touchdown instantly neutralized by a Bears’ touchdown.
As the clock ticked down to the final three minutes of the fourth quarter, the Bears managed to grind out one last touchdown, snapping a 14-14 tie and giving them the lead for good as the game drew to a close.
Midget Kodiaks
The Kodiaks dominated the Westside Warriors in Vancouver, striding to a 40-0 win.
The Kodiaks dominated early and often in this game with Ethan Bernardin and Caleb Nelson scoring twice while other touchdowns were added by Luke Chalk and Jacob Ronald with the latter’s being a fumble recovery in the end zone after a botched punt attempt by Westside.
The Kodiaks’ defensive line wreaked havoc all day, not allowing Westside any chance to get a rhythm going.
lmf midget Stampeders
The Stamps moved to 2-0 after beating the North Surrey Bears 36-21 Friday at Bear Creek Park in Surrey.
Langley’s defence bent but didn’t break, making the Bears earn every point.
The Stampeders defence harassed the Surrey quarterback all game, with sacks by Joe Nicole, Kai Sommerville, Colten Dejong and Harry Somerville.
Joshua Fletcher and Kofi Twumasi had an interception each, while Leatham Bright, Twumasi, Dejong, and Stryker Roloff led the way with five solo tackles each. Owen Jenkins, Jacob Smart, and Nickel posted four tackles each, and Pandeep Hayer had three takedowns.
On offence, the Stampeders pulled off a well-executed fake punt by Dejong for a first down, and the Warriors couldn’t Azuka Okoli, who chewed up 200 yards of real estate.
Stamps quarterback Shawn Lal threw for 75 yards, connecting with Chavis Spencer (50 yards receiving), Sheldon Gangloff (15 yards), and Smart (10 yards).
Touchdowns were scored by Okoli with a pair, Jenkins, Gangloff, and Spencer.
