Should we teach more people how to survive and stay safe in the woods?

It was very lucky that Esther Wang of Langley survived more than two days lost in Golden Ears Provincial Park.

Aside from prayer, she credited her survival to some lessons learned in the cadets program.

Many Canadians take part in similar programs that give them some wilderness skills, including Scouting and Guiding.

But many don’t, or forget those childhood lessons by the time they venture into the woods for a hike in middle age.

Should we do more to make wilderness skills training available to Canadians?
